Hellinger volume and number-on-the-forehead communication complexity

چکیده
Information-theoretic methods have proven to be a very powerful tool in communication complexity, in particular giving an elegant proof of the linear lower bound for the two-party disjointness function, and tight lower bounds on disjointness in the multi-party number-in-the-hand (NIH) model. In this paper, we study the applicability of information theoretic methods to the multiparty number-on-the-forehead model (NOF), where determining the complexity of disjointness remains an important open problem. There are two basic parts to the NIH disjointness lower bound: a direct sum theorem and a lower bound on the one-bit AND function using a beautiful connection between Hellinger distance and protocols revealed by Bar-Yossef, Jayram, Kumar & Sivakumar [BYJKS04]. Inspired by this connection, we introduce the notion of Hellinger volume. We show that it lower bounds the information cost of multi-party NOF protocols and provide a small toolbox that allows one to manipulate several Hellinger volume terms and lower bound a Hellinger volume when the distributions involved satisfy certain conditions. In doing so, we prove a new upper bound on the difference between the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean in terms of relative entropy. We then apply these new tools to obtain a lower bound on the informational complexity of the ANDk function in the NOF setting. Finally, we discuss the difficulties of proving a direct sum theorem for information cost in the NOF model.

A Strong Direct Product Theorem for Corruption and the Multiparty NOF Communication Complexity of Disjointness
We prove that two-party randomized communication complexity satisfies a strong direct product property, so long as the communication lower bound is proved by a “corruption” or “one-sided discrepancy” method over a rectangular distribution. We use this to prove new n lower bounds for numberon-the-forehead protocols in which the first player speaks once and then the other two players proceed arbi...
متن کاملTensor Rank and Strong Quantum Nondeterminism in Multiparty Communication
In this paper we study quantum nondeterminism in multiparty communication. There are three (possibly) different types of nondeterminism in quantum computation: i) strong, ii) weak with classical proofs, and iii) weak with quantum proofs. Here we focus on the first one. A strong quantum nondeterministic protocol accepts a correct input with positive probability, and rejects an incorrect input wi...
متن کاملSeparating NOF communication complexity classes RP and NP
In the number-on-forehead (NOF) model of communication complexity, k players are trying to evaluate a function F defined on kn bits. The input of F is partitioned into k pieces of n bits each, call them x1, . . . ,xk, and xi is placed, metaphorically, on the forehead of player i. Thus, each player sees (k − 1)n of the kn input bits. The players communicate by writing bits on a shared blackboard...
متن کاملNOF-Multiparty Information Complexity Bounds for Pointer Jumping
We prove a lower bound on the communication complexity of pointer jumping for multiparty one-way protocols in the number on the forehead model that satisfy a certain information theoretical restriction: We consider protocols for which the ith player may only reveal information about the first i+1 inputs. To this end we extend the information complexity approach of Chakrabarti, Shi, Wirth, and Y...
متن کاملSeparating the k-party communication complexity hierarchy: an application of the Zarankiewicz problem
For every positive integer k, we construct an explicit family of functions f : {0, 1}n → {0, 1} which has (k+ 1)-party communication complexity O(k) under every partition of the input bits into k + 1 parts of equal size, and k-party communication complexity Ω ( n k42k ) under every partition of the input bits into k parts. This improves an earlier hierarchy theorem due to V. Grolmusz. Our const...
